The charred remains of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur were found inside an industrial-size oven at a Walmart after she became trapped inside and was unable to escape
A distraught mum has shared the horrifying moment she found her daughter’s charred remains after she baked to death inside a Walmart oven.
The remains of Gursimran Kaur, 19, were found inside a walk-in oven inside Walmart’s Bakery department. The incident rocked Halifax, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada when Gursimaran’s body was discovered on October 19, 2024.
Her mum Mandip Kaur, who worked at the department, with her daughter, was the one who made the horrific find. The mum explained she was desperately looking for her daughter after not seeing her on the floor for about an hour. “I opened the door and she was there,” she recalled.

She continued telling The Daily Mail: “I couldn’t handle myself, I was there on the floor with her for five or 10 minutes. I didn’t know what had happened.” Mandip had asked other employees if they had seen her daughter but claimed she was brushed aside and that Gursiman could be helping someone as “Walmart is a superstore.”
She tried to call her daughter, but added her “phone was not reachable.” The mum then recalled seeing a black-brown liquid that looked like tar that was coming from inside the walk-in commercial oven.
The temperatures can reach up to 400 degrees, the oven is used to bake frozen bread. It was later found the liquid had come from Gursimran’s body.
When Mandip said she found her daughter’s body, she added it was burned beyond all recognition. Halifax Regional Police arrived at the Walmart at about 9:30pm that day after they were alerted to reports about a woman being “locked inside an oven in the bakery.”
The dispatcher said responding officers claimed the oven remained turned on but were “unsure if the staff are able to turn it off.” When Halifax police arrived, Gursimran’s body had been taken out of the oven but she was declared dead.
Police initially investigated the teen’s death as a potential homicide. But one month later the death was ruled as not being suspicious. Mandip rejected any speculation that Gursimran had taken her own life, adding: “Does she look depressed? She was so happy.”
A Walmart Canada spokesperson told The US Sun: “We’re supporting our associates during this incredibly difficult time and have provided access to 24/7 virtual care and will provide on-site support, including grief counselling.”
The mother and daughter had moved to Canada from India about two years before the tragic death.
