Eight ambulances and five emergency doctors rushed to the scene at the primary school in the German town of Hürth in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis district.
Emergency workers examined a total of 49 children with 19 found to have suffered injuries in the incident involving tear gas, with twelve rushed to hospital for further treatment.
The fire department declared a mass casualty incident, which unfolded after unknown individuals sprayed pepper spray in a primary school, German media reported.

The building had to be evacuated as fire crews shepherded children and staff to safety. According to the fire department, the alarm was triggered at approximately 10:20 a.m. Eight ambulances responded to the school and five emergency physicians were on scene.
Of the 49 children examined who complained of dizziness, eye irritation, or coughing, 19 were ultimately classified as injured. Seven were treated on site and released into the care of their parents; the others had to be taken to the hospital.
Police cordoned off the area and have taken over the investigation.
