The Maharashtra government ordered an inquiry after a portion of a pillar of an under-construction metro rail route in Mulund in north-east Mumbai collapsed on Saturday (February 14, 2026) afternoon, killing one person. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced ex gratia payment of ₹5 Lakh to the family of the deceased, as demands for strict action grew.

According to the MMRDA, the incident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. near Pier P196 of Metro Line construction works in the Rajiv (Milan) stretch, close to Mulund Fire Station, where a portion of a parapet segment fell from height and struck a passing auto rickshaw and a private car.

According to an operator at Upasani Hospital, 4 injuries were reported from the incident, out of which 1 person, Ramdhan Yadav, was killed. Another person, Rajkumar Indrajeet Yadav, is in critical condition at the ICU. The other two injured persons — Mahendra Pratap Yadav and Deepa Ruhiya — are in stable condition.

The Metro project team is at the site and is working on relief operations and securing the site in close co-ordination with BMC and disaster management authorities, the MMRDA said.

The MMRDA has constituted a high-level inquiry committee headed by Basavraj M. Bhadragond, Director (Projects), MMRDA, to investigate the precise cause of the collapse.

“This is huge negligence,” said Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde.

‘Has the life of Mumbaikars become so cheap?’

Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad, posting on X about the incident, asked, “Has the life of Mumbaikars become so cheap?”

“Why wasn’t there an adequate safety arrangement for the traffic passing below on a busy road while work was in progress?” he added. “Whose responsibility is it? Every time such incidents happen, there’s just a drama of ‘inquiry.’ Who will take responsibility for this? We want development, but not at the cost of Mumbaikars’ lives!”

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray posted on X, “Will the regime blacklist this contractor? Not likely- may be it’ll show a penalty of a few lakhs and let the contractor get more tenders.”

“Life has no value under the BJP regime. Falling pieces from metro lines, unsafe modes of transport, cars/bikes falling into open pits with no help for hours,” he said.

Clyde Crasto, national spokesperson and secretary of NCP-SP, accused Kirit Somaiya, vice-president of BJP Maharashtra, who is from Mulund, of “having his eyes everywhere except his own backyard.”

“Now, will the CM of Maharashtra, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis, take strict action against the MMRDA officials who were in charge and the contractor who is building this Metro line or will they get a clean chit is the question?” he asked.
