A vet has urged that there’s something you should never ignore when it comes to your beloved dog, even though it can be easy to overlook and forget about each week
Owning a dog comes with many responsibilities, but there’s one that a vet has shared owners often forget, but it’s really important to keep on top of it. From feeding them the food that they enjoy the most, to ensuring they always have fresh water to drink, and taking them on regular walks, you’ll know exactly what to do. But when it comes to your dog’s teeth, would you say you’re on top of them?
Amir the Vet shared that there’s a “common” mistake that dog owners make, saying that “dental care is one of the most ignored aspects of canine health”.
He said that it’s “truly so sad” to see a dog who hasn’t had their teeth taken care of, explaining that dogs “use their teeth daily, and therefore, they need to be protected”.
In his TikTok video, Amir said that he sees dogs coming in with bad teeth “every single day,” and he asks the owners, “Do you do anything for your dog’s teeth? and they say, “No”.
He said that they claim that they’ve tried to brush their pet’s teeth, but that their dog “hates it”.
“When dogs have dirty teeth, their breath doesn’t just smell bad; it causes gingivitis, which is chronic inflammation, which can be very painful and can cause regression of the gums, can cause exposure of the nerves, and can cause teeth to actually fall out,” he warned.
What can you do?
Amir explained that if your dog’s teeth are very dirty, you can take them to a vet clinic and “have their teeth cleaned under anaesthetic”.
He commented: “This is a very, very effective way to clean the teeth; however, this is done under anaesthetic, which isn’t something you should solely rely on”.
Amir said you should take responsibility as the dog’s owner by cleaning their teeth or doing something to keep their teeth clean “on a regular basis”.
The “gold standard” for teeth cleaning for dogs is to do it two to three times a week, but he said he understands sometimes this can be “difficult” as the dog runs away and can try to avoid having their teeth scrubbed.
To combat this, many people will try to use “dental chews and treats,” but he said that “unfortunately, most of these are completely ineffective” and it’s just an “unhealthy treat” for them.
He said that it could be a good idea to use a “dental powder” which you “sprinkle over your dog’s food and as they chew it actively cleans their teeth”.
Amir shared the one he uses, as it has five active ingredients and is proven to reduce plaque and tartar. It’s the Vets2Pets dental powder. “It will make your dogs’ breath smell so much fresher, almost immediately. This is something that works in about three days”.
“Remember, guys, your dogs only have one set of permanent teeth, so you need to make sure that you protect them,” he ended the video by saying.
